SNZweig, the premier integrated advisory platform built exclusively for architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) firms nationwide, is pleased to announce its role as the exclusive buy-side financial and strategic M&A advisor to BWBR in its acquisition of Durham, North Carolina-based RND Architects. The transaction officially closed on October 31, 2026.

Strategic Expansion into the Research Triangle

Founded in 1922 and headquartered in St. Paul, Minnesota, BWBR is an employee-owned architecture and design firm with regional offices in Madison, Wisconsin, and Omaha, Nebraska. The acquisition of RND Architects establishes BWBR’s fourth location, expanding its footprint into North Carolina’s growing Research Triangle market.

Operating in Durham since 1987, RND Architects brings a proven track record across higher education, healthcare, civic, and public-sector projects. The office will now operate as BWBR, expanding the firm to approximately 200 professionals and creating opportunities to pursue larger, more complex design projects nationwide.

“We’ve had our eye on the Triangle for some time because of the tremendous growth here,” said Terri Ulrick, President and CEO of BWBR. “RND brings design experience, strong local relationships, and market knowledge that complement our expertise and resources. Together, we can pursue larger opportunities in the region and expand the impact of our design beyond what either firm could achieve alone.” Read BWBR’s full announcement.

“What made BWBR the right partner was that they share our commitment to our employees,” said Charles Nickelson, Principal at RND Architects, who joins BWBR as Principal. “This gives our people more opportunities to learn, grow, and develop their careers, while allowing us to preserve the personal relationships and commitment to service that have always defined RND.”

SNZweig’s AEC Buy-side Solutions

SNZweig’s Mergers & Acquisitions team sourced the transaction and provided comprehensive buy-side representation to BWBR throughout the deal lifecycle, delivering advisory guidance in:

  • Buy-Side Solicitation & Partner Identification
  • M&A Valuation
  • Financial Modeling & Analysis
  • Deal Structuring & Negotiation
  • Transaction Structuring
  • Due Diligence & Closing Support

“Entering a high-growth market like the Research Triangle only works when the operational foundation, valuation, and culture make sense for both sides,” said Will Swearingen, Director, Mergers & Acquisitions at SNZweig. “BWBR went into this process with clear criteria, and RND fit those priorities. We’re pleased to advise BWBR through each phase of the transaction to help them secure the right partner for their East Coast growth.”
